Project: Lifestyle House

The Mediterranean Lifestyle House

Location: Mitzpe Ramon, the Negev Desert Region, Israel
Building type & size: Single family home / 230 m2 which includes a mandatory safe room
Functionality: Family residence with the option of home office
The Mediterranean Lifestyle House represents same area, volume and general marketplace features as a typical Israeli house.

Using common building materials, the design of the heating system is replicable in new housing throughout all climatic regions. Cooling design is adapted to high arid regions where there is a night/day temperature swing.

The energy Concept

Vision: Affordable energy efficient house delivering high level of indoor comfort with minimal back up heating and no compressor A/C for cooling.

Approach: Whole building approach, renewable energy, and operational improvements.

Energy Conservation: An efficient thermal shell (roof Rsi-7, walls Rsi-4, slab Rsi-2, Low-E windows, etc.), combined with passive solar heating, architectural cooling design, innovative thermal mass, air-sealing, energy-recovery ventilation, and PV electric power, provide a balanced climate specific “right sized” home design.

Primary innovations include:

  • walls using exterior thermal insulation;
  • thermal storage – concrete masonry block “air-core” in floor slab;
  • integrated passive heating and active solar energy systems;
  • natural cooling – night-flush ventilation removing prior day’s heat from interior masonry thermal storage;
  • fresh air – energy recovery ventilation (ERV) system reducing energy impacts during design conditions;
  • super-efficient appliances, lighting and innovative wiring presenting reduced demand to 2 kWp PV grid interactive electric system.

Energy Efficiency Improvement: by at least 70%
